Perver K. Baran

Perver Baran holds professional degree in architecture (Dipl. Ing. Arh.) from University of Kiril i Methodij, Skopje - Yugoslavia, Masters in Architecture/Urban Planning from Istanbul Technical University, and Ph.D. in Urban Planning from Istanbul Technical University. She is a faculty member of the Ph.D. in Design Program. In addition, Perver is a member of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Teaching and Research Program at the Center for Earth Observation, College of Natural Resources. She teaches doctoral and master's courses in the areas of research methods, research paradigms and GIS.

Her honors include: University Award for Excellence 2002, College of Natural Resources, NCSU; Who's Who in the World – 2001; Post Doctoral Fellowship, Istanbul Technical University, 1989; Honor of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Istanbul Technical University, 1984; Chancellor Honor of the University of Kiril i Metodij, Skopje, 1984; and 26th July Award: Frank Harcourt-Munning Fund, London, 1981. With her colleagues she is the recipient of the 2nd prize of the International Uskudar Square Urban Design Competition, Municipality of Istanbul, 1987.

Perver's research has centered on urban design and planning, tourism planning, and GIs and spatial analysis. In the area of urban design and planning, her research has focused on issues such as sustainable development, urban open space use, and spatial distribution models of residential densities and land values. In the area of tourism planning, Perver has conducted research on understanding perceptions of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic impacts of tourism, eco-tourism development, and predicting environmental impacts of tourism. In the area of GIs and spatial analysis, she worked on visualization tools to assist communities in North Carolina with planning and managing their development, interactive on-line mapping applications, and analysis of private ground water supply systems impacted by Hurricane Floyd.

Her current research interests are mainly related to: understanding the quality of urban life issues; analysis of urban and neighborhood spatial structure as it relates to health, natural movement, and socio-cultural implications; and GIS, in particular its potential for design and community participation.
