McArthur Freeman

McArthur Freeman, II is a practicing artist and designer whose work includes drawings, paintings, 3-D modeling, and animation. McArthur earned his BFA degree in Drawing and Painting from the University of Florida. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University, with a concentration in painting and a Master of Art and Design from North Carolina State University in Animation, New Media and Digital Imaging. Before joining the faculty at NC State he taught as an Assistant Professor of Art at both Davidson College and Clarion University. He currently teaches courses in Animation as well as traditional and digital drawing as he continues to explore ways to combine both traditional and new media for new approaches to teaching, image-making, and storytelling.

His work has been published in NKa Journal of Contemporary African Art and has been exhibited in several group and solo shows within the United States. His paintings and 3-D scenes juxtapose children’s book illustration, fairy tales, and invented characters with historical narratives, popular culture, and social critique to create a wonderland that has gone awry yet is seductively beautiful. His surreal characters, events, and narratives, investigate many of the myths and absurd truths that exist within real-world experiences.
