There are nearly 30 WolfPrint printers in the College of Design. Sometimes
they will need to be added to a computer.
This page describes how to add printers to a personal (non-lab) Mac
OS X 10.4 computer. If you are using Mac OS 10.5, STOP HERE
and go to these instructions
for OS 10.5. The Macintosh computers
in the College's labs and clusters already have WolfPrint printers installed.
IMPORTANT: Mac OS 10.4 users
will be required to set up their computers to use a local account "short
name" that
matches their Unity ID in order to use WolfPrint printers from their own Macintosh
computers. A local account short name is what is used to login to your computer
when it is turned on. You may have this set to automatically login when you
turn your computer on.
This setting is done through System Preferences>Accounts. If your computer
account short name doesn't match your Unity ID, create a new account and set
the SHORT NAME to match the Unity ID. Then use that account for work instead
of whatever account you may already have.
If you are already using a local account on your computer that does not match
your Unity ID, there's a program that will change all this. If you are interested
in trying this program and you have a COMPLETE BACKUP of your computer, contact design_help@ncsu.edu and
we can help you.
If your local computer account short name already matches your Unity ID, you
only need to install the new WolfPrint software and set up the printers you want
to use.
Note: If you are using Mac OS 10.4, you
will need to install some software on your own computer before proceeding. Click
here to download the WolfPrint software you need to install. Double-click
on the
WolfPrint104.pkg file after it downloads and follow the instructions
there to install the software. Once you have installed the software and restarted
your computer, continue with the following instructions.
Before you proceed, you will need to know some information. You will need:
The name of the printer you want to add (building name abbreviation-room number-printer
number, for
example: bs-203-1). This printer is in Brooks
Hall, room 203.
The name of your printserver for WolfPrint printers (print.ncsu.edu).
Every WolfPrint printer in the College of Design has a yellow sign on it with the name, cost, type of printer, and installed options available on the printer. The signs look like this:

This chart provides detailed information for each WolfPrint printer in the College
of Design. Use the information on this chart to set up WolfPrint printers on
your computer. Detailed instructions on where this information is used are below.

To add a printer go to the Printer Setup Utility.
You can find the Printer Setup Utility in Macintosh
HD:Applications:Utilities.
The Printer Setup Utility will open with a list of all available printers.
To add a WolfPrint Printer
to your computer, click on the Add button. In the next window, you must hold
down the OPTION key on your keyboard and click on
the More Printers... button.

A window will appear with a pull down menu at the top
of the window. Click on the pull down menu and select Advanced.

After selecting Advanced, a window will appear prompting you
for a Device, Device URL, and Printer Model.
Click on the Device pull down menu and select WolfPrint
Print Queue. This is only for WolfPrint printers.
After selecting WolfPrint Print Queue from the Device
list, you will need to fill out the Device Name, Device
URL, and Printer Model information.
Use the chart above to determine the printer's name (Device Name).
All WolfPrint printers use klpr://print.ncsu.edu/printername as the Device URL, where printername matches the Device Name already entered.
Use the chart above to determine the Printer Model.
In this example, you would type bs-203-1 in the Device
Name field and type klpr://print.ncsu.edu/bs-203-1
in the Device URL field. See the example below:

Next select the correct Printer Model for that printer. Use
the chart above to determine the Printer Model. All the WolfPrint printers
in the College of Design are from HP. In this example, select HP
for the Printer Model pull down menu, as shown below:

A new list will appear, where you select the correct Printer Model. Again, use the chart above to determine the Printer Model. In this example, the Printer Model is HP LaserJet 8150 Series. Select the correct Printer Model from the list and click on the Add button.

This will return you to the Printer List window and the new printer will appear in the list. To add the printer's Installable Options, click once on the printer name to highlight that printer and then click on the Show Info button at the top of the window.

The Show Info window will appear. Select Installable
Options from the pull down menu.

Use the chart above to determine the Installable Options for each WolfPrint
printer in the College of Design.
In this example, check the boxes for Tray 4, Duplex Unit and select 72 MB or more from the the Total Printer Memory pull down menu. These are the options installed on bs-203-1.

Once all of the Installable Options are set, click on the Apply Changes button. Changes will not take effect if this button is not clicked.

Congratulations! You have added a printer. You should now be able to print
normally. When you print for the first time in Mac OS 10.4, a login box will
appear. Use your Unity ID and password to log in. Make sure you have enough
print quota to complete your job. Print Quota information and other useful
printing tools are available at http://print.ncsu.edu/.
If you have trouble, please contact the College of Design IT staff in Brooks
202-204 for help. If you have a laptop you need help with, bring it with you.
You can also send an email to design_help@ncsu.edu
with specific information about your problem.
