Step Three: Present Creative Work

Referred applicants will be contacted by Art & Design to schedule an appointment for Admissions Review Days which will occur during late January and early February. Due to the number of applicants being seen, some applicants will be interviewed during the week while others will be scheduled for one of three Saturdays. Appointments cannot be rescheduled unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances.

Applicants must bring to the Review Day the original AND a paper photocopy of the portfolio which will be retained by the department. The portfolio will consist of ten works of art completed while in high school or within the last four years. A 250-word statement that clearly describes the portfolio and articulates the applicant’s interest in Art + Design will be required. A 20-25 minute interview will be conducted by one Art + Design faculty member and a current student. Be selective of work so that the portfolio includes a breadth of skills or visible talents. Decisions about admission will be made on the basis of work submitted during this presentation.

The College of Design reserves the right to deny applicants who submit fraudulent or plagiarized materials. Portfolios and written statements should be the product of the student only.

The portfolio is any collection of creative work produced over recent years that indicates:

  • The kinds of things that interest the applicant, arouse his/her curiosity, or impress him/her.
  • How the applicant expresses or communicates ideas and impressions of the world.
  • The scope or depth of creative activity in which the applicant has engaged.
  • How the applicant solves problems, thinks creatively and presents solutions.

Methods of Copying Work:

Space will be provided to set up the original portfolio for viewing. The photocopied portfolio and written statement should be organized, placed in a 9"x12" envelope and left with the department on the day of the interview.
