Once the application has been forwarded to the College of Design, applicants will be sent a letter of invitation for a formal interview. Applicants must appear in person and bring their portfolios to the interview.

The Department of Industrial Design conducts and scores 20-30 minute interviews with each student during which the student explains his/her design process, visual experiences, and problem-solving approaches through the examples in the portfolio. The interview includes Industrial Design faculty and may include one student who is a major in the program. It is not uncommon for an applicant to be asked to demonstrate skills.

Portfolio: The criteria considered in the portfolio review are as follows:

  • Three-dimensional, analytical and conceptual skills
  • Drawing and compositional skills
  • Organizational, communication and leadership skills
  • Aesthetic sensibility
  • Environmental, technological, social and design awareness
  • Inquisitiveness, inventiveness and imagination
  • Futuristic perspective, mechanical aptitude

The portfolio may include:

  • 10-15 examples of work
  • Examples of three-dimensional work
  • Development sketches to show process and concepts
  • Photographs, slides or computer output
  • No larger than 24" x 36"

The College of Design reserves the right to deny applicants who submit fraudulent or plagiarized materials. Portfolios should be the product of the student only.
