Please read these instructions carefully!
We recommend you request a wired connection to use
at your studio desk and use a wireless connection (if you have one)
other places within the College of Design complex.
You must have a wireless ethernet card
(802.11b or 802.11g, also known as WiFi or Airport Card) to use the
wireless network. Wired networking provides faster connections
for doing things such as printing or transferring large files over
the network. Wireless networking provides the convenience of being
able to connect just about anywhere in the College of Design complex—studios,
classrooms, offices, galleries, even some outside locations. For
browsing the web or checking email, wireless networking is plenty
fast.
The College of Design is now using the campus Nomad 'ncsu'
wireless network for wireless connections in Brooks Hall, Kamphoefner
and Leazar Halls. The Nomad network allows for simple registration to
connect to the network. However, the Nomad 'ncsu' wireless
network is not available in the Downtown
Design Studio. Users there need to fill out an
online StudioNet application to register for the 'Design'
wireless network.
To use the 'Design' WIRELESS network for
StudioNet in the Downtown Design Studio, you
will need to—
- Follow the instructions below to sign up to use the 'Design' wireless
network for StudioNet
- Use an 802.11b or 802.11g compatible wireless ethernet adapter
- Configure your TCP/IP settings
- Connect to the 'Design' wireless network
- Install and configure software for virus protection (http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/)
- Install and configure software for WolfPrint printing and Unity home
space access if you wish to use these.
• Fill out and submit an online application for StudioNet.
You only need to fill out a StudioNet application if you want use the
'Design' wireless network in the Downtown Design Studio. To
complete the application, you must first gather the wireless ethernet
adapter address from your computer. For further instructions on finding
an ethernet adapter address, go to How
to Find Your Ethernet Address. Gather the wireless ethernet
address before continuing with the Online
StudioNet Application.
• After submittting the online application, you will receive an
email with the TCP/IP settings for your computer. Normally it takes less
than 24 hours to hear back from us. During busy times of the
year (beginning of a semester, etc.), it may take up to 3 business days
for your application to be processed and to activate a connection. If
you have not heard back after 3 business days, please send an email to
design_help@ncsu.edu.
• See NC
State ResNet's Setup Guide for instructions on configuring your
TCP/IP settings. Choose the appropriate operating system and configure
your computer.
• After configuring your TCP/IP settings, use your wireless ethernet
adapter to connect to the 'Design' wireless network:
• Macintosh users: Select 'Design' from the Airport menu
or the Network System Preferences. You can add it to the Preferred Networks
list.
• Windows users: Click on the "Wireless Network
Connection"
icon in the taskbar, then click on the "View Wireless Networks" button.
Select 'Design' from the list, then hit "Connect." (If you
have Novell installed on your Windows computer and are having trouble
connecting, contact the IT staff.)
To check your connection after configuring your computer, launch a web
browser and try getting to a web site.

• Symantec AntiVirus, a virus detection application, is
available free of charge to NC State students, faculty, and staff at http://www.ncsu.edu/it/antivirus.
Instructions are located there. You must use your Unity Login to access
this software. Approved antivirus software is REQUIRED for
all computers connected to StudioNet.
If you have trouble, please contact the College of Design IT staff in
Brooks 202-204 for help. If you have a laptop you need help with, bring
it with you. You can also send an email to design_help@ncsu.edu with
