Donors to the College of Design make possible scholarships to undergraduate students within its academic areas of architecture, art and design, landscape architecture, graphic design and industrial design. Scholarships are awarded by the faculty on the basis of academic merit and design talent. Financial need may also be considered.

Fellowship awards at the graduate level are often made to encourage outstanding students to choose the College of Design over competing programs. Graduate education is a key component of the research mission of NC State University.

Endowment funds give in perpetuity, creating a measure of financial security and providing an ongoing source of critical support for the College's students, faculty and programs. Endowments may be established for a variety of purposes, including scholarships, fellowships, professorships, lectures and exhibits, and support of the College's departments, labs and research centers.

The College of Design has several named funds which commemorate former faculty members:

The Robert Paschal Burns Lectures and Seminars on Structural Innovations
This endowment was created by Eduardo Catalano, a former faculty member of the then School of Design, to pay homage to the life of Professor Emeritus Robert P. Burns. The endowment was funded by a gift of $200,000 from Catalano and will provide funds for an annual lecture and seminar that will take place in April of each year. The distinguished visitor will deliver a public lecture and will conduct informal discussions over two days within an architecture graduate seminar dedicated to innovation and experimental structures. Students will be expected to prepare a written reflection in response to the seminar topic presented by the visitor. The best two papers will be selected for publication in a lecture monograph.

Duncan Stuart Design Scholarship (building to endowment)
This scholarship was created by alumni to honor Professor Duncan Stuart, who taught basic design from 1948-80. This scholarship will be awarded annually to an entering transfer student who has, in Duncan's own words, "wandered around and eventually discovered the School of Design."

Edwin Gil Thurlow Scholarship (building to endowment)
This scholarship was created by alumni and friends of Professor Gil Thurlow (1910-1997), who taught landscape architecture in the School from 1947-1974. This scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Landscape Architecture program.

Harwell Hamilton Harris Endowment
This endowment was created by a bequest from the estate of Professor Harwell Hamilton Harris (1903-1990), who taught architecture in the School from 1962-75. This fund supports an annual lecture by an outstanding scholar or practitioner.

Joseph H. Cox Memorial Fund
This fund was created in memory of Joseph H. Cox (1915-1997), who taught basic design and painting from 1954-80. The fund will be combined with a bequest from Professor Cox' estate to create a new scholarship.

Kamphoefner Honor Fellowship
This fellowship was created by the late Henry L. Kamphoefner (1907-1990), founding Dean of the School of Design from 1948-72. This fellowship is awarded annually to a graduate student in Architecture.

Dr. John P. Reuer Memorial Endowment (building to endowment)
This endowment was created in memory of John P. Reuer (1931-2002), who taught the history of design, a required course for all design students for about 25 years. Each spring his classes presented a dramatization illustrating the history of architecture. This endowment will give travel awards to undergraduate students to travel and study design in Reuer's native city, Berlin, or Stuttgart.

Shawcroft Prize for Drawing
This prize was created by Brian Shawcroft, who taught architecture from 1960-80 and has continued to be an occasional visiting instructor. The fund provides a prize to the winner of an annual drawing competition for architecture students.

Vernon F. Shogren Endowment
This endowment was created by former students of Professor Vernon F. Shogren (1927-1995), who taught architecture in the School from 1953-55 and 1961-92. The intent of the endowment is to encourage exploration of alternative directions in design and architecture and to promote unique study and scholarship into proposed endeavors by the students and faculty, both former and active, and others with interests in the College of Design.
