Before going further, please read the information
about DesignPRINT.
There are nearly 30 public printers in the College of Design Information Technology
Labs and Clusters. These printers use the DesignPRINT
system. This page describes how to add
printers to a
personal (non-lab) Mac
OS X 10.5 or 10.6 computer.
If you are using a Windows computer,
STOP HERE and go to DesignPRINT-Adding
Printers for Windows.
If you are using Mac OS 10.4,
STOP HERE and go to these instructions
for Mac OS 10.4. DesignPRINT does not work with Mac OS 10.4
computers. Mac OS 10.6 upgrade disks are available for purchase at the NCSU
Bookstores at a discounted price.
IMPORTANT: Mac OS
users will be required to log in a special way each time they print to a
DesignPRINT printer. They must log in with "WOLFTECH/" before their Unity
ID. Further instructions are below.
You do not need to install any special
DesignPRINTsoftware on Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6 to set up the printers you want
to use. Follow the steps below to add a printer.
These instructions look very similar to the instructions for adding the University's
WolfPrint printers, but they are different. Please follow each step carefully.
Before you proceed, you will need to know some information. You will need:
• The name of the printer you want to add (building name abbreviation-room number-printer
number, for
example: bs-203-1).
• The name of the print server for DesignPRINT printer you want to add. IMPORTANT: There
are four DesignPRINT servers. Printers are spread across these servers. In order
to install the printer correctly, you must have the right server for the printer
you are installing. Use the chart below to find the correct server.
• The installable options available for the printer from the chart below.
Every printer in the College of Design has a sign on it with
the name, server, cost, type of printer, and installable
options available
on the printer. The signs look like this:

This chart also provides detailed information for each DesignPRINT
printer in the College of Design. Use the information on this chart to set
up DesignPRINT printers on your computer. Detailed instructions on where this
information is used are below.

DesignPRINT printers can be set up using MacOS 10.5 or 10.6 System Preferences.
To set up a printer:
Select System Preferences... from the Apple Menu and
click on Print & Fax.

In the Print & Fax panel, do the following
as shown below:
1] Make sure the lock icon in the lower right side is indicating unlocked.
If not, click on it and enter the computer's administrator name and password
to allow changes to be made.
2] Click the + (plus sign) to add a printer.

When the printer setup dialog appears, right-click (or
hold down the Control key and click) on the toolbar at the top of the window
and then choose Customize
Toolbar.

Drag the Advanced icon (1) to the toolbar and click Done (2).

Click on Advanced and wait for advanced options
to load. This may take 15-20 seconds.

From the Type: dropdown menu, choose Windows from
the list.

In the URL: field (1) type: smb://servername/printername,
replacing servername with
the correct server from the chart above and printername with
the name of the printer you want to add from the chart above.
In the example shown below, you would type: smb://des-print.sod.ncsu.edu/bs-105-1.
The "smb://" and the "/"
between the server name and printer name are important. Also, remember there
are four different server names, des-print.sod.ncsu.edu, des-print2.sod.ncsu.edu,
des-print3.sod.ncsu.edu,
and des-print4.sod.ncsu.edu. Check the chart above
and be careful as you type these names to make sure you match the correct server
to the printer you are adding.
In the Name: field (2) type the name of the
printer you are installing from the chart above. You can type some description
in the Location: field if you'd like. This is optional.
From the Print Using: pop-up menu (3), choose Select
a driver to use...

In the search field (4), type the printer model from
the chart above. As you type, the results will appear in the box below. (NOTE:
Do not use the Gutenprint drivers if they appear.)
In the example, you could
type 8150 and select HP
LaserJet 8150 Series.
Now click the Add button (6).

Next, each printer will have different installable options available
depending on the printer model. Again, use the chart above to determine the
installable options for each particular printer. In this example, printer bs-105-1
has
Tray 4, and the maximum amount of memory
available.
Click Continue after selecting the installable options.

This will return you to the Print and Fax system preference
panel.

Congratulations! You have added a printer. Repeat the steps above to add each
WolfPrint printer you want, using the specific printer name each time.
The first time you print to each printer, you will need to perform
another step. Because the DesignPRINT servers are set to require
a login and password, the print system in Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6 will actually
stop the print job (but not the print queue or printer) and mark that job
with the status On Hold
(Authentication Required) as shown in item 1 below. (You may need
to drag the column divider over to see all the words in the Status column.)
Click on the Resume button (2) to continue.

Clicking the resume button will bring up a login window.
IMPORTANT: On Macintosh computers you will need add WOLFTECH/ before
your Unity ID to log in. See the example below. Enter your Unity password as
well. If you don't add WOLFTECH/ before your Unity ID, you
will get an error when the job tries to print.

Your job will then print as usual.

You may purchase DesignPRINT quota at http://des-print.sod.ncsu.edu:9191/ using a credit card. (NOTE: the ":9191" at the end of that URL is
required to access the system.) Log in there using your Unity ID and password.
Click on Add Credit on the left column and fill in the forms provided.
You can also see details about your usage on the DesignPRINT system
at http://des-print.sod.ncsu.edu:9191/.
You may request a quota transfer between the College of Design's DesignPRINT
system and the University's WolfPrint system by clicking
here. Quota
transfer requests do not happen immediately. They must be received and processed
manually. Please plan ahead.
If you have trouble, please contact the College of Design IT staff in Brooks
202-204 for help. If you have a laptop you need help with, bring it with you.
You can also send an email to design_help@ncsu.edu
with specific information about your problem.
Happy Printing!
