Adding WolfPrint Printers on a Mac OS 10.5 Computer

There are nearly 30 WolfPrint printers in the College of Design. This page describes how to add printers to a personal (non-lab) Mac OS X 10.5 computer. If you are using Mac OS 10.4, STOP HERE and go to these instructions for Mac OS 10.4. The Macintosh computers in the College's labs and clusters already have WolfPrint printers installed.

IMPORTANT: Mac OS 10.5 users will be required to login EACH time they print.

You do not need to install any special WolfPrint software on Mac OS 10.5 to set up the printers you want to use.

Before you proceed, you will need to know some information. You will need:
The name of the printer you want to add (building name abbreviation-room number-printer number, for example: bs-203-1).
The name of your print server for WolfPrint printers (print.ncsu.edu).
The installable options available the the printer.

Every WolfPrint printer in the College of Design has a yellow sign on it with the name, cost, type of printer, and installable options available on the printer. The signs look like this:

Printer Name Sign

This chart also provides detailed information for each WolfPrint printer in the College of Design. Use the information on this chart to set up WolfPrint printers on your computer. Detailed instructions on where this information is used are below.

WolfCopy printers can now be setup using standard MacOS 10.5 system preferences. To setup a printer:
Select System Preferences... from the Apple Menu and click on Print & Fax.

 System Prefernces window

In the Print & Fax panel, do the following as shown below:
1] Make sure the lock icon in the lower right side is indicating unlocked. If not, click on it and enter the administrator name and password to allow changes to be made.

2] Click the + (plus sign) to add a printer.

Print window unlocked

3] When the printer setup dialog appears, click on IP to choose internet printing protocol.

4] Select Internet Printing Protocol - IPP from the Protocol: pop-up menu.

select ipp protocol

5] In the Address: field, type print.ncsu.edu (This will be the same for every WolfPrint printer.)

6] In the Queue: field, type printers/ and then the name of the WolfPrint printer you wish to use. Use the chart above to determine the printer's name. All WolfPrint printers use printers/printername in the Queue field, where printername matches the printer's name from the chart above.

In this example, you would type printers/bs-203-1 in the Queue field. See the example below: (NOTE: names are always lower case.)

7] In the Name: field, type the name of the WolfPrint printer, replacing the text that is added automatically. In this example, type: bs-203-1

8] In the Location: field, type some text describing the printer's location. It this example: Brooks 203

enter info in fields

9] From the Print Using: pop-up menu, choose Select a driver to use...

10] In the search field, type the printer model from the chart above. As you type, the results will appear in the box below. (NOTE: Do not use the Gutenprint drivers if they appear.) In the example, select HP LaserJet 8150 Series.

12] Now click the Add button.

select printer driver

Next, each printer will have different installable options available depending on the printer model. Again, use the chart above to determine the installable options for each particular printer. In this example, printer bs-203-1 has Tray 4, a Duplex Unit and Total Printer Memory of 72 MB or more.

Click Continue after selecting the installable options.

This will return you to the Print and Fax system preference panel.

Congratulations! You have added a printer. Repeat the steps above to add each WolfPrint printer you want, using the specific printer name each time.

The first time you print to each printer, you will need to perform another step. Because the WolfPrint servers are set to require a login and password, the print system in Mac OS 10.5 will actually stop the print job (but not the print queue or printer) and mark that job with the status On Hold (Authentication Required) as shown in item 1 below. (You may need to drag the column divider over to see all the words in the Status column.)

2] Click on the Resume button to continue.

printing on hold

Clicking the resume button will bring up a login window. Use your Unity ID and password to log in. You will need to replace the text in the name field with your Unity ID.

Make sure you have enough print quota to complete your job. Print Quota information and other useful printing tools are available at http://print.ncsu.edu/.

You job will then print as usual.

job printing

This step releasing on-hold jobs will need to be done the first time you print to each printer.

Again, you will need to login with your Unity ID and password EACH time you print, not just once per login session.

If you have trouble, please contact the College of Design IT staff in Brooks 202-204 for help. If you have a laptop you need help with, bring it with you. You can also send an email to design_help@ncsu.edu with specific information about your problem.
