Graduate Admission to Industrial Design

Note: Only Track 1 (30 credits) graduate applicants apply for spring admission.

Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

Applicants to the Master of Industrial Design program will be considered for admission on an individual basis. Plans of study will be developed to take into account previous academic and professional experiences. Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Application Form and Fee
  2. Official Transcript
  3. Three Letters of Reference
  4. GRE Scores
  5. TOEFL Scores
  6. Residency Statement
  7. Personal Data Form
  8. Portfolio

Application Form and Fee

Application forms are available online. The fee is $65 for U.S. applicants and $75 for international applicants. Checks for application must be made out to "North Carolina State University" in U.S. dollars for the amount specified.

Official Transcript

Applicants should upload an unofficial transcript for each institution attended into their online application. Official transcripts are only required if accepted. 

Three Letters of Reference

Provide recommendations from at least three people who know your academic record and potential for graduate study. Online recommendation forms are contained in the online application. If, however, you elect to submit offline recommendation forms (paper), please send to the Graduate Admissions, NC State University, Box 7701, Brooks Hall, Raleigh, NC  27695-7701.

GRE Scores

Graduate Record Examination/GRE scores are required if NO previous design degree. 

TOEFL Scores

Foreign language students only must provide Test of English as a Foreign Language/TOEFL score of at least 550/213 in order to be accepted into the Graduate School. International students should review other information and requirements.

Residency Statement

Provide a residency statement if claiming North Carolina for tuition purposes.

Personal Data Form

Provide a completed Personal Data Form.

Portfolio

The criteria considered in the portfolio review are as follows:

Three-dimensional ability
Analytical and conceptual skills
Drawing and compositional skills
Organizational skills
Communication skills
Aesthetic sensibility
Environmental, technological, social and design awareness
Inquisitiveness, inventiveness and imagination
Futuristic perspective
Mechanical aptitude
Leadership qualities

The portfolio may include:

10-15 examples of work
Examples of three-dimensional work
Development sketches to show process and concepts
Photographs, slides or computer output

Portfolios for graduate applications cannot be larger than 8.5 by 11 and will not be accepted if these requirements are not followed.
