The Information Technology department provides file space on the server des-classstore
for use by College of Design students. ClassStore and Transfer
are housed on this server and available on all College of Design Lab computers
and to StudioNet users.
If you're interested in using the network drives ClassStore
and Transfer on your personal computer, follow these instructions.
Users may now access ClassStore and Transfer from off
campus by using NCSU's Virtual Private Network (VPN) service. Go to http://vpn.ncsu.edu/,
login using your Unity ID and password and allow the software to install and
connect to the campus network. You will need to do this each time you want
to connect to the campus network from off campus. Once you are connected to
the campus network via VPN, you can follow the instructions below to access
ClassStore and Transfer as though you were on campus.
Please follow these guidelines when
using Transfer and ClassStore:
For you own protection, do not
keep your only copy of a file in Transfer or ClassStore!
Copy files to your local hard drive
while you work. Don't work directly from Transfer or ClassStore.
Files on Transfer are DELETED each
morning at 8:00 a.m. Once they are deleted, files cannot be recovered.
Please use Transfer as the name inplies—to transfer files
from one computer to another. Please delete files from Transfer when
you are finished to make room for other users' files.
ClassStore is
divided into folders for specific courses. Only students registered for a
specific course are allowed to use that folder. Students should create a
folder and name it using their first and last name. Other files and folders
are subject to be deleted.
Please limit the files in ClassStore
so that all users will have room for their files. ClassStore
folders are limited to 500 MB. Please remove any files you are no longer
using. Please remove any files over two weeks old. When you complete an assignment,
please remove all files related to the assignment to make room for others.
Files that violate the above guidelines
will be placed in a folder named: "****Clean These Out By _________"
(the blank will be a date). Users have until that date to clean up their files
before they are deleted.
Instructions for Macintosh OS X 10.5 or
Later
You must be running Mac OS 10.5 or later to access des-classstore.
To access
the server des-classstore in
Macintosh OS X, start by using the GO menu
on the top menubar, and scroll down and select Connect to Server from
the drop down menu.

This window now appears asking you what server you want to connect to.
In the Server Address line, type smb://des-classstore.sod.ncsu.edu
exactly as shown. Note the smb:// and 3 Ss
in classstore.

If you'd like to save this address as a favorite server, click on the +
(plus sign). This will copy the address into the favorite servers list and you won't
have to type the address each time you connect.
Click "Connect" to continue.
A login dialog box will appear. Type your Unity ID and password.
You may need to replace the text in the Name field.
Click on the Connect button.

The list of available server volumes will appear. Highlight the volume you
want to connect to and click OK. For this example, classstore
and transfer are both selected.
Hold down the Command (Apple) key while clicking on the names
in the list to select multiple server volumes

des-classstore server will now appear in the Sidebar of any finder window.
Click on it to display classstore and transfer in the window.

For some reason, Apple has turned off showing Connected Servers
on the desktop. In order to see the classstore and transfer icons on the desktop,
you'll need to go to the Finder Preferences and check the box to show Connected
Servers.
From the Finder menu, select Preferences...

In the Preferences window, check the box to show Connected
Servers and close the window. You'll need to do this on every IT Lab
and Cluster Mac you use. Settings do not roam with you to different computers.
You may want to do this on your own computer as well.

You will be taken back to your desktop now and these icons will appear. Double-click
these icons to access the server and work away!

You can make an alias of the server volumes once they are connected and on
your Desktop. By using an alias, you only have to follow these steps the first
time you connect to the server volumes. With an alias you just click on the
alias to access the server volume. You won't have to use the Go menu and type
in the address each time you want to connect.
To make an alias, highlight the server volume(s) on the Desktop and go to the
File menu and select Make Alias (COMMAND-L
is the keyboard shortcut).
If you have trouble, please contact the College of Design IT staff in Brooks
202-204 for help. If you have a laptop you need help with, bring it with you.
You can also send an email to design_help@ncsu.edu with
specific information about your problem.
