The Vernon F. Shogren Endowment announces the establishment of the annual Vernon F. Shogren Endowment Award for the support of independent investigation into architecture and design. The annual awards are intended to assist recipients to develop their capacity in design, innovative design investigations, and to provide for sharing the results of their investigation by requiring that the reports be deposited in the NC State, College of Design Library Collections. The reports will employ both graphic and written explanations.

Eligible persons will include present and past students of the College of Design. Current faculty members who are past students of the College of Design are also eligible. Although the focus of the award is primarily architectural, projects in any design discipline will be considered.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Significance of proposed subject matter
  • Feasibility of proposed procedures for work in the field
  • Demonstration of adequate verbal and graphic skills
  • Potential for accessibility, reproducibility and completeness of report and its relevance to the field of design

Final selection of the recipient, and the amount of the Award will be by the Vernon F. Shogren Endowment Board.

Recipients may retain possession of original manuscripts and notes. The library copy however, must be an exact facsimile, of archival materials, itself capable of accurate reproduction at reasonable expense. The library, or first copy, must be funded within the Award stipend. Recipients must also agree to make a verbal presentation of their project at the College of Design. Recipients will not receive an extra stipend in order to make this presentation.

The work must be completed within one year from beginning of the Award, except under extraordinary circumstances. Payment of the final twenty percent of the Award will be withheld until the approved copy has been deposited.

The Vernon F. Shogren Endowment reserves the right to review publication of the report in any other form, including incorporation of the work into any other work, or study. This review is primarily for the purpose of assuring that proper credit is acknowledged for the work sponsored by this Award. Reports may not be submitted to satisfy requirements for an academic degree.

The program is aimed primarily toward recipients as individuals. Under special circumstances however, it is possible that work could best be done by a small team. Applicants may not use the Award in connection with another grant, except in unusual and convincing cases. If this combination of Awards is contemplated, it must be clearly stated in the application. No combinations subsequently proposed can be considered.
