Materials Lab Rules & Procedures
 

1. All materials lab TA’s (currently on the College of Design payroll), faculty, emeritus faculty, and staff requesting use of the Materials Lab must first attend an orientation session conducted by the Materials Laboratory Director. This orientation session will cover the following:

  • Lab Safety
  • Lab Security
  • Woodworking Zone and Related machinery/Tools
  • Metal/Plastic Zone and Related Machinery/Tools
  • Welding Zone and Related Equipment
  • Model Making/Painting Zone and Related Equipment

2. Upon successful completion of the Materials Laboratory orientation session, demonstration of competency in the above areas, and the demonstration of an understanding of the safe operation of equipment, authorization to use the materials laboratory can be granted by the College of Design Materials Laboratory Director. Persons authorized to use the Materials Laboratory must be approved by the Materials Laboratory Director for the zone(s) and equipment they intend to use.

3. At no time is any individual allowed to work alone in the Materials Laboratory. Anyone granted the right to use the Materials Laboratory must be accompanied by another individual (‘buddy’). Furthermore, the ‘buddy’ must be capable of contacting Emergency Response Personnel in the event of an emergency. The person who is authorized to use the Materials Laboratory is required to clearly instruct the “buddy’ on the location of the telephone and the number to call (515-3333).

4. A key to gain access to and use the materials lab during non-scheduled hours may be checked out temporarily. A key may also be issued long-term on a case-by-case basis. Both temporary and long-term use requests are subject to review and approval by the College of Design Materials Laboratory Director. Such review and approval authorizes the use of the key and the ability of the key holder to open and be responsible for the materials lab. The authorized person is responsible for lab safety, lab security, lab clean up, and accident prevention. Persons issued a key have no authority to loan that key to someone else.

5. The following types of work are allowed in the College of Design Materials Laboratory:

  • Work related to educational activities
  • Work related to research
  • Work related to extension projects
  • Personal work

There cannot be any direct cost to the University or College of Design for personal work (e.g., cost of materials and/or consumables). Work related to educational activities, research and extension have priority over personal work.

6. No commercial work or work for professional offices is allowed.
